Mike & Andra's 2006 RV Trip!

Day 5
July 18 - At Colorado Springs, CO

Today we drove to Cripple Creek, an old gold mining town that's been rejuvenated by tourism. There we ate lunch and took a short but scenic ride on the Cripple Creek Narrow Gauge Railway. Of course this was a hit with Dawson and Matthew who both love trains. It was also very educational; we learned a lot about the history of prospecting and the gold rush in Colorado. Later, we went on a guided tour of the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, an actual working gold mine still in operation. We descended 1000 feet underground and saw examples of mining equipment and its evolution from the late 1800s to present.

By the time we got back to the RV, we were too tired to go to the baseball game as we had planned. No problem, we're on vacation, who needs a schedule? Instead, I went on a hayride at the campground with the kids while Andra and my mom cooked hamburgers and hot dogs.

Tomorrow we are going to the top of Pikes Peak on the Cog Railway.
