Dawson and Matthew's first real chess tournament!

On January 3, 2009 we traveled to the Pawndemonium 2009 chess tournament in Asheville, NC. This was the first-ever chess tournament for the boys, who had been "chomping at the bit" to compete in a real chess tournament for months.

Results (Grade K-3 section):
Dawson 3.0 (2 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws)
Matthew 1.0 (0 wins, 4 losses, 2 draws)

Matthew is especially to be congratulated for one of his draws. Outnumbered at the end, his opponent with a king, queen and bishop while Matthew only had a bare king, he bravely resisted for 50 moves while a tournament director kept count. At the end of the 50 moves, his opponent unable to close the deal, Matt was awarded the draw by the TD. Afterward, Matt told us "I decided I wasn't going to let him take my King!"

Dawson during his Round 3 game, which ended in a stalemate draw.

Here's Matt bringing out his bishop.

Matt arguing something with a tournament director in Round 5. I never found out what the fuss was all about!

Dawson during his Round 6 game, which later ended in a draw after he "swindled" his opponent into losing her queen in a K+Q vs K endgame.

The tournament venue, an old gymnasium converted into a community center.

Although they didn't win a trophy, they each earned a chess medal from Mom & Dad for their good sportsmanship.
